South Houston, TX
The city of South Houston, Texas, is located in Harris County, southeast of Houston itself between Pasadena and William P. Hobby Airport. Its borders form essentially a rectangle full of grid-based streets, covering three square miles of land and housing some 17,000 residents.
The original settlement of Dumont was incorporated in 1913 as the city of South Houston, which kept the area from becoming part of Houston proper. Early industry consisted of shipping produce by railroad, and the city later saw the birth of manufacturing industries with construction of the Houston Ship Channel. South Houston experienced rapid growth in population between the 1940s and early 1960s. Today the Lewis Food Town grocery store chain is based in South Houston.
